Common questions
Does a roofer need a license in Illinois?
Yes. Under 225 ILCS 335/9 no roofing or waterproofing work may be done for pay except by a roofing contractor licensed by IDFPR (or its qualifying party and employees). Exceptions are narrow, such as work on your own property.
What is the difference between a limited and an unlimited license?
A limited license covers residential properties of 8 units or fewer; an unlimited license also covers commercial and industrial roofing (225 ILCS 335/2). Towns may issue limited licensees permits only for residential buildings of 8 units or fewer.
Are Illinois roofers bonded and insured?
To be licensed a roofer must file a continuous bond of $10,000 (limited) or $25,000 (unlimited) and show liability, property damage and workers' compensation insurance (225 ILCS 335/3). IDFPR's public file doesn't list policies, so ask for a certificate of insurance.
Why does a listing say "discipline on record"?
IDFPR's licensing file records a disciplinary action against that license, such as a fine or reprimand. We show each entry exactly as IDFPR publishes it. It doesn't mean the license is restricted today; the status shown is today's status.
Can a roofer pay my insurance deductible?
No. Illinois roofing contracts must state that the roofer cannot pay, waive, rebate or promise to pay, waive or rebate any part of your insurance deductible (225 ILCS 335/5.5).
Why is there no phone number or street address?
IDFPR's public file lists only city, ZIP and county. Use the contact form on a listing and we pass your message on, or ask the roofer to claim its listing and add details.
